Trees that are more than 50% damaged probably should be removed. A tree that is dying can often continue to survive for a few more years but will more than likely have limited growth and eventually die. If the tree is already dead, it is best to have it professionally removed to allow for a new tree sapling to be planted in its place.

A dead tree can be identified from wood that looks dry and lifeless. Dead wood is very brittle and susceptible to breakage in strong winds. Being dry, dead wood is also very dangerous in bush fire prone areas, such as the Dandenong Ranges.
